The Right to Read

When a child can’t read, their chances of incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment increase. The Right to Read shares the stories of an activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read

The featured activist is FULCRUM’s own Kareem Weaver. Although his participation began as one of many contributing voices, Kareem’s involvement grew as the film highlighted more of his work in the Oakland community. Kareem eventually accepted the role of Producer, and he worked closely with Director Jenny Mackenzie and Executive Producer LeVar Burton to document the ongoing fight to make system-level change.
